Physical Education

Welcome! Our physical education program utilizes age-appropriate physical education practices designed to facilitate students' physical, intellectual, social, moral, and emotional growth. It is based on the premise that all children can learn and improve.

In our once-a-week PE classes, we use a wide range of teaching strategies to emphasize self-improvement, cooperation, and the development of positive attitudes surrounding physical activity and fitness.

Physical Education Concepts

Movement

Movement concepts in PE help children understand how to move. In the early grades, for example, our program emphasizes the variety of ways we travel (e.g. running, galloping, skipping). Children practice skills to illustrate movement concepts such as changing directions, following pathways, levels and planes, and speed.

Skill Development

We teach basic psychomotor skills such as throwing, catching, kicking, and striking in all primary grades. Students in intermediate grades apply these skills to team games and sports, cooperative activities, and various forms of rhythmic movement.

Wellness

We also cover wellness concepts such as physical fitness and safety, bones and muscles, healthy food choices, and healthy lifestyles. Each semester fourth and fifth graders participate in Virginia’s Wellness and Fitness Testing program. Students use their test scores to develop goals for their individualized fitness plan.
