Student in costume singing on stage

The Rural Point Elementary music program provides quality music education that focuses on experiential learning in whole class and small ensemble settings. Our positive and nurturing environment allows students to develop a basic understanding of music and empowers them to use music as a means for improving their quality of life.

From preschool through third grade, students sing traditional folk songs from a variety of cultures. First graders begin learning about music notation, and by the end of their third year can read, write, and play rhythms fluently. In addition to rhythm, students in the lower grades also work on musical concepts such as dynamics, tempo, instruments of the orchestra, and phrasing.

Students in fourth and fifth grade apply what they’ve learned in the primary grades to the recorder (fourth grade) and guitar (fifth grade). Fifth graders may also sing in our Rural Point Chorus, or they may choose to participate in our Drum Ensemble. Both of these groups perform for live audiences in the community and at school.
